The life of man is short. What he accomplishes is but the wind. Where is the courage that you used to have?
Gilgamesh p.16
Gilgamesh. Now that I am reading the bible that uses an old language that I do not understand at all, I am beginning to appreciate the story of Gilgamesh. Any how, I remember that this line was said by Gilgamesh towards Enkidu, when they were trying to get the head of the monster that represents death that seems to have a nice character. Or, at least better than Gilgamesh who is an egoist. I am not criticizing Gilgamesh for being an egoist, because I believe that’s how most of the humans are, including me.
Back to the quote, I like the metaphor “what he accomplishes is but the wind.” We can feel and see some evidences of the wind, but it passes by so fast, one will never grasp the same wind ever. The actions we take will surely give consequences but our memories are sometimes so vague, that time can take it away from our reminiscences. However, I believe there are some exceptions too. I believe there are some events that people will never forget about, such as the Holocaust.
As a personal opinion, I like the guts of Gilgamesh when he said, “Where is the courage that you used to have?” Even if what they were trying to do was getting the head of a monster that is protecting the beautiful forest. And even if what they were trying to do might have been useless but dangerous.
